And the winner is… the Blood and Sand.
It’s Oscar night and this old Hollywood cocktail is perfect for this golden evening. Making its first appearance in 1922, the Blood and Sand cocktail was a tribute to the Rudolph Valentino movie of the same name. Later, the drink turned up in the 1930′s Savoy Cocktail Book; it’s one of the few classic cocktails made with scotch.
This drink has something to offer the masculine and the feminine. A hardy scotch, sweet sand-colored liquor, and the fruit flavors of orange and cherry.
Blood and Sand Cocktail
3/4 oz. scotch whiskey
3/4 oz. sweet vermouth
1/4 oz. cherry brandy
1 1/2 oz. orange juice
Shake over ice cubes, pour into a glamorous glass, and garnish with a cherry and orange peel.
Tip your glass to Valentino, sip, and enjoy.
Beautiful drink! Is Kirschwasser considered an appropriate Cherry brandy for this?

According to my side kick Ryan; kirsch has a higher abv and is not sweet but a little woody. It might make for a harsher cocktail. Kerry

Thanks so much! I’ve had this bottle of Kirsch for so long and the only thing I’ve managed to use it for is fondue!

Yeah I wouldn’t use Kirsch here. A wonderful drink though, one of my favorites. I’ve seen the proportions vary quite a bit, right up to equal parts of everything, but I’ve never had it be anything but delicious.
